How to enjoy Rio de Janeiro – the “Marvellous City”

The soaring mountains, sandy beaches and a beautiful harbour make Rio de Janeiro to be called as “cidade maravilhosa” or the “marvellous city”.  The second-largest city of Brazil with more beautiful natural settings makes it ideal for Rio Holidays.

If you are looking for a great holiday, then no wonder that Rio de Janeiro is your ideal choice. Rio is the melting point of colours, creeds and races. In Portuguese, Rio de Janeiro means “River of January”. Rio was Brazil’s capital until 1960 and now it is the second largest city after Sao Paolo. The residents of Rio called as “Cariocas” have made extensive contributions especially when Rio was the capital and the centre for growth in the fields of culture, music, literature and history.


Spending Rio Holidays is the great way of enjoying your holidays. You can visit in Rio the tourist beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana which are enchanting. Another way is to visit the Sugar Loaf Mountain or Pão de Açúcar. From the mountain, you can have a spectacular view of Guanabara Bay and the city of Rio. It is also ideal for rock climbers. On the mountains, you will also find the “Floresta da Tijuca” or ‘Tijuca Forest’. If you are on top of the mountain at the end of the day, then you can enjoy the beautiful view of the sunset.

Yet another charming mountain is the Corcovado Mountain where you will find the 38 meter statue of “Christ the Redeemer” with outstretched arms has become a symbol of Rio city reflecting the friendliness and warmth of the people of Brazil. This statue of Jesus Christ is magnificent and will take away your breath. From the mountain, you can have a view of favelas going down the hillside and joining the beautiful city below. You can also have an enchanting view of the bustling Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.
    
One can really enjoy the city during its annual carnival as the whole city will be enlivened for complete 4 days with music, parties, singing, street parades and balls of the samba dancers who are also brilliantly costumed. If you are a true football fan, don’t forget to visit the Marcana Stadium which is more like a pilgrimage. Of course, you can feel the presence of legends like Pele and other Brazilian great football players.

If you are done with the mountains, then it is ideal to get to the beach of Av. Atlantica and you can enjoy in the one of the world’s most popular beaches, Copacabana. You can sit for hours in the beach enjoying the ice called “bottle of chopp”  - Brazilian lager and watch the Atlantic Ocean go by.

In case, you are a culture buff then spend your day at Centro District of the city which is famous for historic buildings like Municipal market, the churches Igreja da Santa Cruz dos Militares and Igreja de Candelaria. You can also visit the one of the oldest streets in Rio, the Travessa do Comercio which has many bars and small independent shops. After spending a day here, take the tram to reach the Santa Teresa District up the hill where you will find the colonial plantation mansions converted into boutique hotels, shops, galleries, eateries, etc.  You can have a wonderful view of Atlantic Ocean sipping a Caipirinha – a Brazilian cocktail.
